Understanding CSRD Reporting

The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), successor to the Non-Financial Reporting Directive (NFRD), raises the bar for corporate sustainability disclosures across Europe. It expands scope and depth, requires reporting against the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), and introduces a structured Sustainability Statement within the management report.

CSRD applies to large listed undertakings and large non-listed public-interest entities (PIEs), followed by other large undertakings under the Omnibus timeline. Many of these companies — and an increasing number of SMEs opting in voluntarily — are moving ahead of the formal timelines, driven by market expectations and supply-chain pressures.

Digital reporting is next: inline XBRL (iXBRL) tagging of the Sustainability Statement is expected to start from FY2026 reporting onwards, once the technical and regulatory details are finalized. In short, complex requirements and multiple moving parts demand strong tools.

Create your Sustainability Statement and narrative

Under CSRD, sustainability reporting is more than data—it’s communicating strategy, progress, and impact with clarity. Tangelo gives you control over both the Sustainability Statement and the wider narrative inside your (integrated) annual report. With automated typesetting and flexible editing, you can produce designed drafts from the start, keeping content consistent and quality high while managing inputs from all contributors in one structured workflow.

  • Automated typesetting for unmatched productivity and consistent design

  • Amend rolled-forward content quickly and efficiently each year

  • Collaborate flexibly with internal teams or your design agency

Incorporate ESG performance metrics

Reliable ESG data is central to CSRD reporting, yet integrating and maintaining it efficiently remains a challenge. Tangelo offers an open, flexible approach that lets you connect, manage, and update sustainability data in a way that fits your setup — whether linking tables and figures to spreadsheets, importing data from ESG systems, or combining both.

  • Connected data for synchronized updates across your Sustainability Statement

  • Full control over ESG metrics within your designed report

  • Flexible integration with quick setup and API options for deeper connections

This open setup ensures that even without Tangelo ESG Collect, you can maintain full accuracy and control over ESG data throughout your report.

A seamless Collect & Report workflow

For organizations aiming for a fully integrated CSRD process, the Tangelo ESG Collect companion product extends the Tangelo platform with a seamless Collect & Report workflow. It connects the collection, enrichment, and assembly of ESG data and narrative content directly with your Sustainability Statement and annual report in Tangelo—ensuring one connected process from disclosure to external report.

With Tangelo ESG Collect, you can:

  • Capture and manage ESG data, narrative inputs, and supporting evidence aligned with ESRS and VSME frameworks

  • Track progress across teams, entities, and material topics linked to DMA outcomes

  • Assemble structured disclosure tables and link them directly to reports in Tangelo

  • Ensure completeness and traceability across all content for assurance readiness

All narrative and metrics carry their tagging context into Tangelo, enabling a seamless flow from collection to publication. Tangelo’s open XML format, including tagging and audit metadata, also allows direct integration with other systems.

Data-driven elements that boost clarity

Sustainability reporting under CSRD often benefits from clear visual elements that make complex topics easier to understand. Tangelo enables you to create dynamic, data-driven components that bring your Sustainability Statement to life—such as visual indicators for material impacts, risks, opportunities, and time horizons. These elements help readers grasp the context behind your disclosures while maintaining accuracy and consistency.

  • Visualize DMA outcomes, categories, and other key indicators in tables and charts

  • Generate graphical elements automatically from synchronized data

  • Ensure consistency between underlying data and visual representations throughout the report

Pinning: compliance, pre-tagging, and better navigation

Tangelo’s pinning feature helps you pin paragraphs, tables, and figures in your Sustainability Statement to the relevant ESRS datapoints. Each pin shows exactly which requirement is covered where, giving you immediate visibility into coverage, completeness, and potential overlaps. You can also indicate which datapoints are in scope, based on the outcome of your DMA, ensuring completeness checks reflect your material topics. Pins support internal review, assurance, and future tagging—without interrupting the authoring process.

  • Pin paragraphs, tables, and visuals directly to ESRS datapoints

  • Check completeness and spot gaps or overlaps at a glance

  • Mark datapoints in scope according to your DMA outcomes

  • Reuse pins later as placeholders for inline XBRL tagging

ESRS content index and in-content labels

A clear overview of where each ESRS requirement is addressed helps both readers and reviewers. Tangelo automatically generates an ESRS content index as your Sustainability Statement evolves, ensuring every disclosure can be traced back to its exact location. Optional in-content labels highlight which ESRS requirement each section covers, improving navigation and transparency for all stakeholders.

  • Generate and update your ESRS content index automatically

  • Add in-page labels showing which ESRS requirement each section covers

  • Link directly from index entries to the relevant sections in your PDF or online report

Ready for digital reporting (inline XBRL) when you are

Digital reporting is the next phase of CSRD, with inline XBRL (iXBRL) tagging of the Sustainability Statement expected to start from FY2026 reporting onwards, once the technical and regulatory details are finalized. Tangelo keeps you ready for this step, with tagging managed directly in the same platform used for authoring and review—no external tools or rework needed. And when using Tangelo ESG Collect, tagging information is carried forward automatically, ensuring a smooth transition to digital reporting.

  • Tag directly within Tangelo—no separate or bolt-on tools required

  • Manage extensions with full control and built-in validation

  • Keep tagging and content automatically aligned throughout the report
